Wurlygig is a unique combination of Euclidean sequencer and rotary Scalemaker. There are four concurrent color-coded sequencers organised into racks making Wurlygig easy to use. Simply set the number of available steps and total events – these will then be distributed according to the Euclid algorithm.
A Euclidean rhythm is the optimal distribution of events within a given number of steps (pulses). The event distribution can be rotated to create different rhythms.
Euclidean rhythms are musically effective, especially when the total number of events is relatively prime to the number of steps – this creates syncopated rhythms.
The animated arced cursors in the rotary dial interface help to visualize compositional choices. Unlike a radial cursor – they are dedicated to individual sequencers that can move at different speeds.
The master cycle tempo can be set between 0-500 bpm. The speed is visualised by the outer rotary cursor
You can set individual sequencer speeds to be calculated in polymeter or polyrhythm relative to the master cycle.
The speed dial graduation-marks (numbered 1 to 25) output duration values half or a third of the previous mark, straight values interleaved by triplets.
There is a stats panel for timing guidance: the upper beat value is the step duration. The lower beat value is the sequencer cycle duration. The 'sync' value represents the sequencer cycle to master cycle duration ratio (the point where the cycles coincide) and 't/s' is the sequencer cycle time signature with relation to the master cycle (in 4/4).
Rhythms in polymeter align at a common starting point but have different cycle durations. Each cycle synchronizes with the master cycle based on step duration and step total.
Polymeter is the most effective ‘polybeat’ type for musical outcomes especially when used with pitch information to generate harmony.
Polyrhythms are separate concurrent rhythms that occur within a given cycle duration. Each cycle synchronizes with the master cycle based on cycle duration values.
Use the scale maker to easily build any scale from all 1500 derivable from 12 tones.
There is also a convenience 'lucky-dip' picker that can be used to select from 100 common tonal and exotic scales.
Scale pitches can be arranged in different patterns. Choose from scalic or arpeggiated types
Wurlygig is unique in its integration of the rotary Scalemaker with a rotary Euclidean event generator. It enables the exploration of 2.86 x 10^30 possible combinations.
